PLANNING

This week I spent most of my time looking at other people’s music videos. I'm coming up with a clear plan of what I want to do, including developing a mood board and colour board to make it easier for me to maintain a steady and consistent idea throughout the development I've also decided on a font which is a major factor in the development of the music video due to the fact it is supposed to be a text-based concept I've connected some links to YouTube videos which I've watched to gain inspiration for what I want to do

MY PLAN

My plan is to produce a lyric video this entails a series of images moving across the background while the text of the the song appears as a song most of these videos only in corporate two or three images in the background my intention is to create a whole sequence that way I can show a variety of different skills and techniques as well as making it more interesting to watch I have notice a lot of these videos get extremely repetitive where the imagery in the background doesn't really reflect what is being said during the song I want to tell a story and in order to do so I'm going to have to break away from the normality of the lyric video and make something a little bit more traditional

I really liked the Nina Nesbitt video and how it felt like you were watching a story through the use of imagery I think I'm going to play with this and keep the concept extremely simple Andy corporate a stop motion idea into a form above image that way I can have a story progress without having to use constantly footage which will be less training on cameras and will give me more use add reach individual one as well as not needing to worry about lighting as I can colour create a image extremely easy compared to video one of the elements I particularly liked is the use of a Polaroid and this is something I would like to incorporate into the idea I could possibly use some AI generation to create a custom Polaroid template which I can then manipulate with the images I take myself to create the stop motion it would also allow me to create a series of different transitions between different scenes

the Casper music video incorporates 3D elements and this is something that I feel like I want to incorporate into my own design as my background is more 3D orientated however I don't want to be as overtly obvious as this video in my use of 3D and want to try and hide it in plain sight for almost a seamless appearance if I can get some footage at the ocean I can possibly superimpose some other 3D elements on top of it and try to make it look as natural as possible

the friends lyric video shows an amazing use of 2D animation and this is something I want to incorporate into my video I could possibly use be it for transitional purposes or just creating something to move the design forward I almost want to do a day in a life style take on it where it feels like you're writing on a whiteboard and having it come to life as a good scene I also think you would help break up the overall flow of the video and give something a little bit later on with the change the pace and also how the video is progressing as I don't want it to become too repetitive where these videos fall short in regards to what I need to produce for the criteria

so all end I want to create a music video that is incorporating multiple different elements of 3D and 2D while creating a linner story via stop motion and live footage with what my song is about I think getting some filming done or maybe a beach or in a forest may look statically correct as well as choosing more natural tones in regards might a colour palette there will be some significant difficulties with that as natural tones tempted blur very well together so trying to create contrast in certain scenes is going to be key I've created a mood board and a colour board to help keep my focus narrowed into the Pacific concept that I'm going into

Untitled-1.png
The colours I've chosen in this colour palette and a mood board as supposed to reflect a more calming nature so going for oranges I like to Blues as it helps sadly, sort of scene it was also statically very naturally looking instead of going for more harsh and bright colours which may be more eye-catching going for the more soft tones gives me a little more flexibility when it comes to mixing elements together is also significantly easier to colour correct into these colours which means I will spend less time producing those elements giving me more time to focus on the development of the entire thing one thing I have noticed compared to normal windmills which would be on land at the sea variants tend to have a distinctive colour of the base at them this is something I'll have to take into account when creating the 3D assets
this is a digital storyboard the images above care from left to right in sequence of my music video I've used a IR generating tool called mid journey to produce them is help me create a better visualisation of what I want and the journey the man is supposed to be taking throughout it as well as generating some concept art for my boat animation the scenes where there are already beach in the images will have a superimposed wind turbine in the background the location what are the locations I'm looking at has a set of wind turbines in the background anyway so I may be able to get some live footage of them as well as CGI

Research

This week I've spent most of my time researching locations that I think would be suitable for filming as well as Creating a short list of elements I need to make sure I film while I am on location I've also been doing some research into sustainable power sources which I can utilise to recharge my camera if needed and more environmentally friendly alternative methods of getting to set location there are two locations I have in mind currently what is Brean which is near Weston Super Mare is approximately an hour and a half away so not having to travel too far will also help with reducing emissions the other location is slightly further away but I think is more suitable to what I am looking for it's a location called Porthcawl which has a lot more grass and is a lot more natural as it does not have as many tourists had going towards it the danger of that is ensuring that I don't cause any ecological damage when filming as it is an understood location so ensuring that my short list is filled as well as getting any extra footage is essential to ensure that I don't have to make I don't have to make multiple trips and therefore risk damaging the environment and increased by emissions

Production

This week I've started production of the elements for my scene I started off by creating the template for my Polaroid images the idea being is if I can create one template which I'm able to distract and drop images into your massively speed up my production time I started off by getting a reference image off of the Internet so I had an idea of what I wanted I then fed this image to mid journey to produce a one-of-a-kind image which I could use without having to worry about any copywriting I then removed the middle of it in Photoshop and added a philtre layer pause orange which I then made ever so slightly transparent to give the orangey static which was Polaroid centre half the overall result is brilliant except the only thing I wish I could have done slightly better with it is add a slight graininess to the philtre to make the images look less clean as I think it will take away from the story a little bit the fact that it just looks too perfect Polaroids tenon to have like distortion to then which gives them more character

Next step of this was to create a test shot of the effect I wanted to do so using some images that I took from my set I created a file called F1 or frame one as is an easier way for me to keep track of all the individual scenes I was then able to take that straight into after effects and create a short pilot clip to ensure the effect I wanted was going to work I found with a little bit of trial and error that having a slight rotation on the polaroid’s gave in more depth and made it feel more cinematic it's also at this point I decided to add black bars to the top on bottom like you would find in a film I don't know why I just personally find it aesthetically nice and I think it adds something to the video that it was lacking
the next step was to play around with different speeds and durations to to ensure that you were able to see the overall effect, and it was the case of them flashed up to quickly i made multiple variations at different speeds and compare them together with feedback from other people within the class I stalled on my final speed which is about 10 frames per image before the next one popped up
Considering the nature of the project I wanted to ensure that I was able to find all my assets we can quickly as well as share ease of compatibility to keep things simple I've provided all photo assets are png so I don't have to worry about background and quick and easy to use nature of fire format the only other format I will necessarily have to use is a traditional video format such as MP4 and a 3DS Max file or obj I won't have to worry about the compatibility of this however as I'll be pre-rendering the assets from 3DS Max into a video format to input straight into after effects in regards to ensuring ease of navigation in regards my files I've created a file system that allows me to quickly order the images into the proper framing and segregate them from individual projects my stock images I'm going to get my live action that I had filmed I have not named as it is a unique regenerated code anyway align keeping them all within one folder so if I do need access to it is simply drag and drop.

Production

this week I work on me 3d model of the wind turbines I start  by input the images from my board into 3ds max I chose to use this software as it is what I'm most experienced and i know id be able to get great results without using it too much therefore decreasing the amount of emissions ill be producing via using the pc

After developing the 3D model, I didn't read it or a green background as I wanted to keep the render time down. I also reduce its render frame only to select a section. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a screen capture of this because I was for it; I had not posted an image of the result. I did this intentionally to mask the black outside and then apply critical light effect after-effects to remove the green. It did not have to be to clean because it was only going to be in the background, so I could keep the render time at a minimum by reducing the resolution of the render.
The next step of this was decreed this concept from footage I shot while at the beach I then took the wind turbine model and imported it into the image I think he liked them and created a mask as I then did I applied a blur effect and also a colour correct to ensure that they looked as natural as possible within the scene I am I was left with this result the result itself I'm extremely happy with there isn't much I think I could have done better except possibly increased the render resolution as that is a little bit of uncanny valley coming on where they look almost too fuzzy within the environment I played around with blur for significant amount of time and this was the best I can get it

05-06

Production

Week 5 to 6 I just spent finalising and completing the overall effect I spent a significant amount of time putting in all the lyrics which took a lot longer than I thought it would after that I created a series of different transitions which I could use again and again and allowed me to massively increase my production type the one thing that took me the most amount of time and it ultimately led to my biggest if I could do this better moment was my 2D animation I played around for a significant amount of time within Photoshop figuring out how its animating system works after learning how to do it I created a short video showing how I produced the animation overall I'm quite proud of the result but I wish I could have done slightly more with it if I had a little bit more time to develop this specific section though I think it could have been instead I've used it as a background piece to give the seem a little bit more character and break up the aesthetic of the video throughout

There are a couple of different ways the industry may get feedback these can consist of process is such as test screenings and focus groups as an active way of getting input whereas passively social media interactions can be invaluable for gathering feedback in a way that is less active but this comes with pros and cons as you do have situations where people do not give you honest feedback but instead only try to cause difficulty but it can be just as helpful in the example of Sonic the Hedgehog they try to make the main character slightly too realistic and it did not gel well with the audience the adopted this based on the feedback they were given and is now a booming franchise with two films and another on the way listening to your audiences feedback is crucial to ensuring the long jeopardy of franchises and productions I personally I'm goanna have to gather feedback via active means by asking my peers for feedback and running a focus group of likeminded individuals that have knowledge of the VFX industry and how it operates this may be a bit harsher than some critics may be as they are trained to spot the issues with production.

Evaluation
Whether value is here I'm going to do this in two ways my own personal valuation of the work and then how others are perceived personally I am very happy with the results I think I've set out to do everything that I wanted to achieve and I have also reached the criteria of the assignment it is both about environmental practise and has environmental practise in mind of the development however there are some parts I would love to change and some of it quite minor some of them are pretty major for example I wish I had got a bit more live footage so I could have some more variation throughout the video of the ocean and of more open areas instead of having to keep my shots quite closed the nature of how I've done my editing as well leaves a little bit to be desired when it comes to the transitions between each of the elements it is something I will need to work on however I don't think that it massively impacts the overall result but it's something that I've spotted and it's going to bug me until I get something sorted out for it the only other point that I can really raise at this moment is some of my cuts aren't quite right with my life footage I should have cut slightly earlier certain parts and cut slightly later in others the result of it kind of distracts from the meaning in those particular scenes I do however think the overall meaning of the video is coming across but maybe a little bit too subtle perhaps some more referencing towards other mills or some more transitions towards them would emphasise the message I'm trying to take and put front and centre of the video however there are some elements I'm extremely happy with despite all of that I think the Polaroid effect is exactly what I was looking for the only little thing is maybe having them fall into frame purely to break up the nature of them just appearing but the overall result I'm extremely happy with the drone footage I have got has become insanely useful and looks brilliant as a transitional piece and the location I chose was perfect for the tone illustrator set for the video is also nice having a mix of 3D and real windmills in the environment as it helps create the illusion that that will real instead of just a few of them
It's on the feedback that was given to me I may be slightly harsher on myself and I think I am being as most of the feedback stated until I pointed out the issues that I had spotted they weren't visible however a lot of good points were raised with one of the most significant being the colour palate I've chosen if I had a bit more time I would have gathered more feedback based on peoples opinions possibly have gone some external feedback to try and improve the way he was messing with the video however julians feedback was primarily positive and was extremely fair the only that week there was suggested is to have for the video proof read prior to showing it due to spelling mistakes and work on the timing which is all points that I think that would improve the video and it's something that I'll keep in mind in the future
